I really appreciate it when students try their best to speak English while reporting, presenting or facilitating their work in front of the class. Just this shows me as their language teacher that they actually really, truly want to learn and improve.
This is the case of the first reporter in 12-Lithium. So, what I did is help him make his instructions and explanations clearer. I commend the effort he has given in facilitating today's class.
Actually, when it comes to English, a lot of students become conscious and try to shy away from it. Students always ask me, "Ma'am, pwede tagalog?" Ma'am, Can we speak in Tagalog? I think the problem is the lack of good foundation when it comes to Grammar and Vocabulary; the students are not confident enough to speak their mind. They aren't sure of what word to use and how to express themselves without other classmates making fun of them.
I remember asking them on our first day together, "If you will rate your English Speaking skill from 1 to 10, 10 being the highest and 1 the lowest, what rate will you give yourself? And most of them answered either a five or lower than five. It is saddening to hear these kind of thoughts from them. They are still young and very much capable in learning any language they want of they just make an effort to do so.
So what Dale did during his report is something I'm very appreciative of. Not to mention the fact that he even thought of revising the guide I gave him and making an activity that is fun and interactive.
His classmates showed excitement and eagerness to perform well and achieve good result. They brainstormed ideas and came up with a funny little stunts while showing the learning they acquired for that particular day.
I'm looking forward to what other strategies and activities these kids have up on their sleeves.
