So today, we were studying I wish + could and If I were ~, I could / would ~ Key Structures with my san-nensei at my Chu base school.
My Japanese Teacher of English (JTE) asked me to give an example for the first one, so I said, “I wish I could celebrate Christmas with my family.” He gave me an “Aww” look that almost made me emotional, and replied, “Oh, I really wish you could!” So I smiled real wide and answered, “It’s only been a few months, though, so I’ll visit them after a year.”
For the second key, he asked me to complete the sentence, “If I were handsome,~~~”
“~ I would pursue the girl I like.” 😂 He and the kids laughed so hard. I was trying to lighten up the mood, because it seemed like they felt bad that I am away from my family during Christmas.
