Southeast Asian Arts & Crafts: Candle and Crayon Batik Art Activity in MAPEH 8
Batik is an Indonesian technique of wax-resist dyeing applied to the whole cloth or fabric to create beautiful and colorful designs. It originated from the island of Java, Indonesia. It is made either by drawing dots and lines of the resist with a spouted tool called a canting, or printing the resist with a copper stamp called a cap. (Ref: The Art of Batik | Full Moon Loom)
Today, I will give you a glimpse of what we do in our Art Class in MAPEH 8.
After discussing the lesson about Southeast Asian Arts and Crafts, the students were tasked to make either a candle or a crayon Batik Art. They had the choice which of the two they would submit for their first Performance Task in Arts.
In this video, I included the sample how-to-videos I showed my students before they began working on their artwork. The first one was the simple Crayon Batik Art, followed by the Candle Batik Art.
These video clips were taken last September 2022. In-person classes have just started and our school decided to have two groups of students come to class alternately every week. Group A went to school for one week. The week after that, they will stay at home and do asynchronous activities their teachers assigned to them while Group B had the same lesson Group A had at school.
So if you would notice, the class size is very manageable. Each group has at least 25 to 30 students. If you asked the teachers, they would have told you how great it would be to maintain this class size. However, we know that there are not enough classrooms, facilities, or teachers to make this possible.
Since this is just after the two-year virtual classes, the kids are all excited and happy to finally be back at school, not only to study but also to finally be able to meet their friends and teachers they only knew and saw on their screens. We are still required to wear masks at all times.
Some kids are using candles so I decided to have them turn off the ceiling fans so it's pretty hot and humid in the classrooms.
Of course, there are kids who cannot afford to bring some materials so we opt to share them with one another.
There were students who didn't want to participate, but I reminded them that MAPEH actually gives PErformance Tasks 70% of their grade. So if they wouldn't submit one, they will automatically fail the component.
I am really happy to see these kids back in the four walls of the classroom.
This was the first Art Activity we did last year. Look forward to the next ones I will be sharing soon!
