My 5th graders are learning how to ask questions like "When is your birthday?" and "What do you want for your birthday?"
Today, they've already finished practicing these questions and were tasked to create a birthday present card. They asked their friends when their birthday was and what gift they wanted to receive.
A week ago, one of the kids asked me. I thought she was just trying to practice our key sentences/ questions so I responded, "Oh, my birthday is August 22nd!" and added, "I want to buy a new bicycle!" A week passed and it was time to visit their school again. We had our final speaking practice and then it was time to go to my next class.
On my way down the stairs, she called my name 'Anne Sensei!'. I stopped and asked what she wanted. She said, "My present for you!" and gave me her Happy Birthday Card output. Instead of choosing a friend, she, apparently, chose me and drew my new bike as her birthday present. How sweet these kids are!
